Who would have thought a team which was trolled hard for their auction strategy (earning nicknames Chennai Senior Kings and Old-age home), a team which had to move away from its home and adapt to a new home - to sit handsomely at the second position? (playing one less game than the topper) – Well the Yellow Army certainly did ! The '30+ aged squad' has been performing exceptionally well and is proving their doubters that experience is always crucial and can never be taken lightly. Let us analyze the influential elements that have been indispensable for the Men in Yellow’s success so far.
In a sport like cricket, it is essential that majority of the players play to their potential and contribute to team’s success, without heavily depending on a single player. This is one area where CSK stands apart from all other franchises. While teams like RCB rely on their batting stars Virat and ABD, it is completely a different story for CSK who have seen different match winners for them in each of the games this season.
Deepak Chahar has truly become one of the greatest finds of this edition. His first ball of the IPL to Rohit Sharma which marginally missed the outside edge, hinted something special about the 25-year old pacer. Since then, he has been quite exceptional with the ball, barring a couple of games. Chahar has picked up a total of 6 wickets in 7 games and has put on some memorable displays against the likes of SRH and RR. It is expected that the seamer will be out for minimum 2 weeks due to the hamstring injury he picked up during the last game and let us all hope that he recovers quickly and returns to the field to produce some more impressive performances.
Bought for just 2.2 Crore in the auction, Ambati Rayudu has clearly been the standout performer this season in terms of consistency. Rayudu’s scores in this edition are 22,39,49,12,79,82,46. He has successfully reached the 30-run mark five times out of seven and is currently the owner of the orange cap - playing one game less than second-placed Kane Williamson. He, along with Shane Watson and Suresh Raina has been the primary reason for those brilliant starts during the powerplay overs. With half of the season to play, Ambati Rayudu will only get better and continue to play a pivotal part in CSK’s upcoming victories.
While there are players who take it to the interviews and spend their time replying to their critics, Captain Cool lets his bat do the talking to shut all those HARSH critics (No pun intended ;) ) While several people were thinking that MSD’s career is finished, busy looking for his replacement, the CSK skipper is stylishly answering them back with several finest batting displays, this season. MS has already scored two 70+ scores and is currently placed at the 11th position in the leading run-scorers list. With this upgrade in his form, his fans would be praying to hear few more ‘Dhoni finishes off in style !’ chants before the season ends.
This has got to be one of the reasons behind CSK’s approach in buying ‘Old’ experienced players during the auctions. With someone like MS Dhoni as their skipper, it is evident how CSK pulls out some incredible victories out of nowhere during high-intense chases. 4 of their 5 wins have come in the last over including those unimaginable chases against MI and RCB where Dwayne Bravo and MS Dhoni’s heroics snatched a win away from the opponents. It is safe to say that if you have a weak heart, then Chennai Super Kings’ games are certainly not for you !
